Ends of Beginnings Part II: The Birth of כלל ישראל

Hints to ישראל and בראשית that Span Across Multiple Words

Three years ago, I wrote an entry on this blog on how the end of the Torah (לעיני כל ישראל) is very much bound to it's beginning (בראשית ברא). Now let's take a different look at that concept.

Since we are nearing שמחת תורה, I was curious as to whether any roshei or sofei teivos exist in Tanach for the words ישראל or בראשית.  I searched in Base HaSefer and quick answer...they do not.  I then relaxed the search to see if a type of sequence of תוכי תיבות existed for these words - where each word in a sequence merely contains the corresponding letter of the source-word.

At first glance, what I found didn't seem so exciting. There are many occurrences of each sequence in Tanach: a search for ישראל reveals 293 and a search for בראשית reveals 45. But then something struck me - if you examine the first case of each pattern in the Torah, a flip side of the same coin appears:

The first pasuk regarding the beginning of the story of Avraham and Sarah displays a sense of a dismal finality where hope is lost - the Gemara says that it wasn't merely that Sarah never had children, but that childbirth for Sarah was a physical impossibility.

The second pasuk regarding the announcement of the upcoming birth of Yitzchak reveals a first ray of hope for Avraham and Sarah - a new beginning.

I then wondered if a connection had ever been noted between these two pesukim in a meaningful way. What I did find is in פסיקתא רבתי סימן מב: וה' פקד את שרה which delves into the wording of חבקוק ג:יז,יח together with a parallel midrash in בראשית רבה נג:ג:

.....and breaks it down into the following parallels:

The midrash here often brings snippets (highlighted in bold) of the relevant parallel pesukim and I have highlighted some areas of ישראל, בראשית interest in red.

The first thing I noticed in the פסיקתא רבתי is that the final two segments of the drasha on the pasuk in חבקוק bring our exact two pesukim from above with תוכי תיבות ישראל, בראשית hinting to a possible direct progression bettween the two.

The second thing I noticed in both פסיקתא רבתי and בראשית רבה is that the first parallel pasuk is from הושע ט:י which contains the only instance in Tanach where a lashon of ישראל and בראשית (the latter albeit with a suffix) appears in the same pasuk:

So it turns out that our drasha in the Pesikta begins with a ישראל, בראשית segment and ends with ישראל, בראשית segments.

The Birth of Yitzchak Represents the Beginning of כלל ישראל

The critical juncture of the birth of Yitzchak doesn't merely represent the birth of a son to an individual person, but instead the beginning of a generational המשך of serving G-d and the beginning of the notion of כלל ישראל as a nation.

We already see in the grid above displaying the stages of progression of the coming birth of Yitzchak that the Midrash Rabba introduces an overarching national theme to the discussion. There are times in the נביאים where the terms צאן and בקר refer to כלל ישראל.  This can be seen in how the Targum Yonason translates יחזקאל לד:לא and הושע י:יא brought by the Midrash Rabba:

Additionally we see other sources which directly ascribe a notion of ישראל to Yitzchak's birth or Yitzchak himself:

With this Ralbag it brings home the idea that we may have seen the concept of זרע as the nation of Israel mentioned earlier in our "Bereishis" hint pasuk וקראת את שמו יצחק והקמתי את בריתי אתו לברית עולם לזרעו אחריו.

Finally we examine the day of Rosh Hashana which in itself is the beginning of the year after and ending of the year. The birth and development of Yitzchak figure prominently.

In the added musaf bracha of זכרונות, the gemara in Rosh Hashana discusses which pesukim of זכרונות qualify to be mentioned:

Very close to our central point - when הקב"ה remembered Sarah and Yitzchak was born, this is not merely considered a זכרון for the purpose of an individual but for the purpose of the many (כלל ישראל).

The קריאת התורה for Rosh Hashana is discussed in Maseches Megilla:

This option - the birth of Yitzchak is where we begin nowadays. It's interesting that the kria over the two days of Rosh Hashana takes us on the journey of Yitzchak's development: from his birth all the way to the עקידה.  It's interesting that the significant line we referenced before - כי ביצחק יקרא לך זרע - is mentioned during the קריאת התורה.

This indeed brings home the idea of the cyclical nature of the year and it קריאות with a seamless flow from an end to a beginning. In the weekly קריאות, an end-beginning transition from וזאת הברכה to בראשית and for Rosh Hashana, the birth of Yitzchak representing the end of Avraham and Sarah' terminal despair and the beginning of the development of כלל ישראל.

One final note

If we expand our search above to include not only occurrences of בראשית with ישראל but even ראשית.  Here, we simply look for an instance where the words are consecutive:

The backdrop here is that in the days of חזקיהו המלך, klal Yisroel was bringing much of their crops to Yerushalayim to support the כהנים and לויים and also much of their livestock for the purpose of קרבנות. Notice that at the end of the previous pasuk, soon before our matching search, we encounter the phrase למען יחזקו בתורת השם - a fitting juxtaposition since sandwiched in between לעיני כל ישראל and בראשית ברא upon the siyum and beginning of the Torah we say:
