On this day of תענית אסתר we beseech ה' in the leadup to פורים in order to recall the meaningful fasting and תפילות that were offered to ה' at the time of מרדכי and אסתר. Let’s examine some of the typical requests that we make to ה' when we have dire needs.
The גמרא in תענית mentions the three or four keys that are in the hands of ה' that He hasn’t passed to an agent: the keys to childbirth, resurrection of the dead, rain and livelihood.
גמ' תענית ב.
אָמַר רַבִּי יוֹחָנָן: שְׁלֹשָׁה מַפְתְּחוֹת
בְּיָדוֹ שֶׁל הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא שֶׁלֹּא נִמְסְרוּ בְּיַד שָׁלִיחַ,
וְאֵלּוּ הֵן: מַפְתֵּחַ שֶׁל גְּשָׁמִים, מַפְתֵּחַ שֶׁל חַיָּה, וּמַפְתֵּחַ
שֶׁל תְּחִיַּית הַמֵּתִים. מַפְתֵּחַ שֶׁל גְּשָׁמִים — דִּכְתִיב:
״יִפְתַּח ה׳ לְךָ אֶת אוֹצָרוֹ הַטּוֹב אֶת הַשָּׁמַיִם לָתֵת מְטַר אַרְצְךָ
בְּעִתּוֹ״. מַפְתֵּחַ שֶׁל חַיָּה מִנַּיִן — דִּכְתִיב: ״וַיִּזְכֹּר אֱלֹהִים
אֶת רָחֵל וַיִּשְׁמַע אֵלֶיהָ אֱלֹהִים וַיִּפְתַּח אֶת רַחְמָהּ״. מַפְתֵּחַ
שֶׁל תְּחִיַּית הַמֵּתִים מִנַּיִן — דִּכְתִיב: ״וִידַעְתֶּם כִּי אֲנִי ה׳
בְּפִתְחִי אֶת קִבְרוֹתֵיכֶם״.
בְּמַעְרְבָא אָמְרִי: אַף מַפְתֵּחַ שֶׁל פַּרְנָסָה,
דִּכְתִיב: ״פּוֹתֵחַ אֶת יָדֶךָ וְגוֹ׳״. וְרַבִּי יוֹחָנָן, מַאי טַעְמָא
לָא קָא חָשֵׁיב לְהָא? אָמַר לָךְ: גְּשָׁמִים הַיְינוּ פַּרְנָסָה.
The
מהרש"א there delves into the specific choice of פסוקים offered as support since there are other
candidates that seem worthy where ה' uses the keys to offer assistance:

וירא ה' כי שנואה לאה ויפתח את רחמה וי"ל דניחא ליה לאתויי קרא

וישמע אליה אלהים
ויפתח וגו' וכן בשל גשמים יפתח ה' לך וגו' ובתחית המתים כי אני ה'
בפתחי את וגו' אבל האי קרא דלאה לא נסמכה הפתיחה לשם .......ומיהו
בפותח את ידך אע"ג דלא נסמך לשם דרשו בו כן לפי שפותח ומשביע הם בלשון
נסתר ושינה לכתוב ידך בלשון נוכח ולא כתיב ידו בלשון נסתר לדרוש מיניה ידך ולא
ע"י שליח.....
From the above we
see that the critical factor for a פסוק to be used is that שם ה'
is used in direct proximity to the wording of פתח.
The only outlier is the fourth key of livelihood which does not contain
this critical factor and רבי יוחנן subsumes it under the category of the key of rain which
provides livelihood.
One can use Base
Hasefer to shed light on this דרשה by following the steps shown in the
following screen to search the תנ"ך for all instances where שם ה' occurs adjacent to the root פתח:
1) select שורש from the search settings on the right
2) in the search bar, enter the word פתח
followed by a space and an asterisk (wild card character as a place holder for
a second word)
3) after using the switch to the right of the
search bar to open up Advanced Search, open the Parts of Speech tab (third tab from
the right)
4) a vertical listing of search terms will be
on the right. Click there on the row with
פתח
and then select Verb in the Word Type dropdown.
Then click on the row with the asterisk and select No Prefix from the
prefix dropdown and G_d : G_D from the Objects dropdown
5) open the Distances tab (2nd from
the right)
6) make sure words are selected in the word to
word distance unit dropdown and enter a distance range of 0 to 0 with the help
of the slider
7) select the Not in Order button on the top
left of the search bar
8) Clicking the search button will yield the
above six resulting פסוקים.

In rows 1, 3, 6 we see the פסוקים quoted by the גמרא
·
Rows 4 and 5 can be discounted since גי יפתח
אל refers to a place name as
opposed to a specific action done by ה'
·
Row 2 is a very interesting exceptional case where the opening of the
mouth of the אתון ofבלעם is mentioned elsewhere in the גמרא as having been a one-time event that ה'
set in place shortly after the world was created
Interestingly, in the second ברכה of שמנה עשרה, we can definitely find
all four keys:
אתה גבור לעולם ד' מחיה מתים אתה,
רב להושיע, משיב הרוח ומוריד הגשם, מכלכל חיים בחסד, מחיה
מתים ברחמים רבים, סומך נופלים, ורופא חולים, ומתיר אסורים, ומקים אמונתו
לישני עפר........מלך ממית ומחיה ומצמיח ישועה. ונאמן אתה להחיות
מתים. ברוך אתה ה' מחיה המתים
Resurrecting the dead, in addition to the ultimate תחיית המתים, can additionally be used as a metaphor to
describe helping raise those who are low such as the fallen, sick and
imprisoned ones. An additional hint of מלך ממית
can be bringing low those who are high and mighty.
Interestingly enough, the טור
detects extra hints to the four keys in the 51
word total of the ברכה:

Interestingly enough,
the wording ממית ומחיה comes from none other than תפילת
חנה which possibly the most famous response in תנ"ך for the use of
one of the מפתחות – that of
childbirth. It contains a sequence which
contains praise for ה' on whom our
fate hinges whether for the bad or for the good:
(שמואל א:ב:ו) ה' מֵמִית וּמְחַיֶּה מוֹרִיד
שְׁאוֹל וַיָּעַל . ה' מוֹרִישׁ וּמַעֲשִׁיר מַשְׁפִּיל אַף מְרוֹמֵם
. מֵקִים מֵעָפָר דָּל מֵאַשְׁפֹּת יָרִים אֶבְיוֹן......
Her pouring out תפילה to ה'
in the opening of ספר שמואל bears a striking resemblance to that of the plight of אסתר in the מגילה. The words of חנה
quoted above remind us of Purim-like
themes of a topsy-turvy reversal of fortunes similar to Mordechai/Esther vs.
Haman.
But that’s just the
beginning as we have striking resemblances in wording between חנה’s story and אסתר’s story:
(שמואל א א:טו) וַתַּעַן חַנָּה וַתֹּאמֶר
לֹא אֲדֹנִי אִשָּׁה קְשַׁת רוּחַ אָנֹכִי וְיַיִן וְשֵׁכָר לֹא שָׁתִיתִי וָאֶשְׁפֹּךְ
אֶת נַפְשִׁי לִפְנֵי ה'
(אסתר ה:ז) וַתַּעַן אֶסְתֵּר וַתֹּאמַר
שְׁאֵלָתִי וּבַקָּשָׁתִי
(אסתר ז:ג) וַתַּעַן אֶסְתֵּר הַמַּלְכָּה
וַתֹּאמַר אִם מָצָאתִי חֵן בְּעֵינֶיךָ הַמֶּלֶךְ וְאִם עַל הַמֶּלֶךְ טוֹב
תִּנָּתֶן לִי נַפְשִׁי בִּשְׁאֵלָתִי וְעַמִּי בְּבַקָּשָׁתִי
In these locations we
have three out of the four sequences of ותען...ותאמר in
the entire תנ"ך. Additionally, in the first and last פסוק
above, we have the only instances in תנ"ך of ותען...ותאמר...נפשי
Moreover, this
section of the מגילה where אסתר approaches אחשורוש and invites המן to two feasts has its own uniqueness. While there are a number of places which can
be considered turning points in the story of the מגילה, these פסוקים occupy the very center of the מגילה in פסוק and word counts. The פסוק we quoted above (אסתר
ה:ז) is the exact middle פסוק (84th) of its
167 פסוקים. According to the internal
database at Base Hasefer there are 3,044 words in the מגילה
(please correct me if I’m wrong)
and the middle two words (1522, 1523) are highlighted in the very next פסוק:
(אסתר ה:ח) אִם מָצָאתִי חֵן בְּעֵינֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ
וְאִם עַל הַמֶּלֶךְ טוֹב לָתֵת אֶת שְׁאֵלָתִי וְלַעֲשׂוֹת אֶת בַּקָּשָׁתִי
יָבוֹא הַמֶּלֶךְ וְהָמָן אֶל הַמִּשְׁתֶּה אֲשֶׁר אֶעֱשֶׂה לָהֶם וּמָחָר אֶעֱשֶׂה
כִּדְבַר הַמֶּלֶךְ
Where do we have
the only other appearance of the word שְׁאֵלָתִי (and the phrase אֶת שְׁאֵלָתִי)
in תנ"ך? Of course, in the story of חנה shortly before she begins her תפילה.
(שמואל א א:כז) אֶל הַנַּעַר הַזֶּה הִתְפַּלָּלְתִּי
וַיִּתֵּן ה' לִי אֶת שְׁאֵלָתִי אֲשֶׁר שָׁאַלְתִּי מֵעִמּוֹ
The wording of שאלה can be seen to be connected to the wording of שאול or an abyss. Each of
these personalities found themselves in a deep hole, in a matter where they
beseeched ה' to grant life.
Each of them
experienced a sharp reversal of fortune when ה' answered their תפילות.
Each of them played
a critical role in our life and death struggle against עמלק:
·
חנה: as her תפילות were answered with a son who would kill אגג
and directly appoint שאול המלך who would fight against עמלק
·
אסתר: whose תפילות along with מרדכי’s would result defeating אגג’s
descendants המן and his sons
May ה'
answer our תפילות on this 13th
day of Adar.
