A New Step Forward for Base Hasefer
I'm pleased to announce a new release of Base Hasefer featuring a simple, but very practical addition to the site: Parsha Quick Links.
Ironically, the inspiration didn't come while sitting in front of a computer but while sitting at a wedding waiting for the chupa to proceed.
I found myself with free time and decided to review Shnayim Mikra on my phone. Base Hasefer's Tanach Viewer feature already contained everything I needed, but because the site was originally designed primarily for large-screen desktop use, navigating through the pasuk selector on a phone wasn't nearly as convenient as I wanted.
That experience led to a simple question:
"Why shouldn't the current week's קריאת התורה be only one tap away?"
The result is a new collection of Parsha Quick Link buttons that now appear prominently throughout the site.
With a single tap, Base Hasefer can automatically determine the current week's reading and immediately open the Tanach Viewer in full-screen mode:
- Shnayim Mikra (Chumash with Targum)
- Tikun Korim for the week's parsha and it's haftara
- Additional Parsha-related reading modes designed for quick access
Whether you're reviewing the Parsha on the go, preparing leining while commuting, or simply taking advantage of a few unexpected free minutes, the goal is to make getting to the קריאה nearly instantaneous.
The new buttons are available 1) in the home screen on the upper right of the feature panels (see below); 2) from the system menu; 3) again as a convenient location finder within the Tanach Viewer feature itself; 4) via direct site URLs such as this and this.
More Than a New Feature
Although the Quick Links are the most visible addition in this release, much other work has taken place behind the scenes.
Over the past several weeks I've intensified a push to integrate modern AI-assisted development tools into the Base Hasefer development process. Rather than replacing traditional software engineering, these tools have made it practical to revisit portions of the codebase that had accumulated technical debt over many years.
In addition to updated and improved popup Help documentation, this release also seamlessly includes substantial work that users may never notice directly:
- Elimination of longstanding bugs
- Improved phone app support
- Numerous refinements that contribute to a smoother overall experience
Ironically, some of the most valuable improvements are precisely those that are almost invisible.
Wikisource Now Links to Base Hasefer
I'm also grateful to volunteers at the Hebrew Wikisource/Wikitext project for recently incorporating direct links from every pasuk of Tanach to the corresponding section in Base Hasefer's Tanach Viewer. This integration makes it easy by offering an additional point of acces to move seamlessly between the two resources while studying the Tanach. Try the example here for the first pasuk of פרשת עקב.
A New LinkedIn Product Page
I'm also pleased to announce that Base Hasefer now has an official LinkedIn Product Page.
The page includes screenshots, demonstration videos, an overview of the platform, and information about its use by researchers, educators, and students.

I Didn't Want to Leave You Without Some דברי תורה
In an early blog post of mine, I introduced you to Base Hasefer's Text Comparator feature which lets one compare sections of Tanach to each other. Then I specifically displayed a type of case-study that I hope to continue into the future from time to time: Comparing the week's הפטרה to it's main קריאת התורה. Of course the Quick Links described above will now improve access to sight-comparisons between the word usage in the two readings.
Without cluttering this blog entry (you can view detailed screen shots of how to execute Text Comparator searches at the link above), let's jump straight to a comparison between Parshas Eikev and its haftara at Yeshaya 49:14 - 51:3.
While haftaros typically were chosen since they shared common themes and wordings with the main קריאת התורה of Shabbos, one might think that this second installation of the ז' דנחמתא series of haftaros following Tisha B'Av would follow a different track and perhaps not share as much with the main kria. I wondered about this and still found the following intriguing similarities:
First let's examine a trop-sequence that is limited in Tanach only to these two readings:
- (דברים ט:כא) וְֽאֶת חַטַּאתְכֶ֞ם אֲשֶׁר עֲשִׂיתֶ֣ם אֶת הָעֵ֗גֶל לָקַ֘חְתִּי֮ וָאֶשְׂרֹ֣ף אֹת֣וֹ בָּאֵשׁ֒ וָאֶכֹּ֨ת אֹת֤וֹ טָחוֹן֙ הֵיטֵ֔ב עַ֥ד אֲשֶׁר דַּ֖ק לְעָפָ֑ר וָֽאַשְׁלִךְ֙ אֶת עֲפָר֔וֹ אֶל הַנַּ֖חַל הַיֹּרֵ֥ד מִן הָהָֽר
- (ישעיהו נ:ב) מַדּ֨וּעַ בָּ֜אתִי וְאֵ֣ין אִ֗ישׁ קָרָ֘אתִי֮ וְאֵ֣ין עוֹנֶה֒ הֲקָצ֨וֹר קָצְרָ֤ה יָדִי֙ מִפְּד֔וּת וְאִם אֵֽין בִּ֥י כֹ֖חַ לְהַצִּ֑יל הֵ֣ן בְּגַעֲרָתִ֞י אַחֲרִ֣יב יָ֗ם אָשִׂ֤ים נְהָרוֹת֙ מִדְבָּ֔ר תִּבְאַ֤שׁ דְּגָתָם֙ מֵאֵ֣ין מַ֔יִם וְתָמֹ֖ת בַּצָּמָֽא
The section from the קריאת התורה recalls the מעשה העגל. The words of תוכחה in the haftara seem to echo a fairly similar idea with הקב"ה arriving somewhere and no one there to greet Him. The time of the מעשה העגל should have been an auspicious moment of the nation receiving the לוחות, but instead we find them turning away from הקב"ה and dancing around the עגל. Also note the similarity of the haftara's wording "ואין עונה" which reminds us of the famous words spoken at the time of the egel: (שמות לב:יח) אֵין קוֹל עֲנוֹת גְּבוּרָה וְאֵין קוֹל עֲנוֹת חֲלוּשָׁה.
Now let's examine the common word usage among the two קריאות. Some are uncommon in Tanach and sometimes they are the only two unique occurrences:
- (דברים ח:יז) וְאָמַרְתָּ בִּלְבָבֶךָ כֹּחִי וְעֹצֶם יָדִי עָשָׂה לִי אֶת הַחַיִל הַזֶּה
- (ישעיהו מט:כא) וְאָמַרְתְּ בִּלְבָבֵךְ מִי יָלַד לִי אֶת אֵלֶּה וַאֲנִי שְׁכוּלָה וְגַלְמוּדָה גֹּלָה וְסוּרָה וְאֵלֶּה מִי גִדֵּל הֵן אֲנִי נִשְׁאַרְתִּי לְבַדִּי אֵלֶּה אֵיפֹה הֵם
- (דברים ח:יט) וְהָיָה אִם שָׁכֹחַ תִּשְׁכַּח אֶת ה' אֱלֹהֶיךָ וְהָלַכְתָּ אַחֲרֵי אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים וַעֲבַדְתָּם וְהִשְׁתַּחֲוִיתָ לָהֶם הַעִדֹתִי בָכֶם הַיּוֹם כִּי אָבֹד תֹּאבֵדוּן

All said and done, this release represents another step toward making Base Hasefer not only a powerful research platform, but also a tool that's increasingly convenient for everyday learning and study.
